What Causes Itchy Scalp?
Infection, allergic reaction or autoimmune problems may cause an itchy scalp. Over-the-counter products and changes to haircare regimens may be all that's necessary to treat scalp itch.
A person’s scalp may itch for a number of reasons. Sometimes it’s a mild and temporary condition, and sometimes it is a symptom of something serious. Some causes of itchy scalp include:
- Dandruff
- Allergic reaction to a hair care product (allergic contact dermatitis) such as shampoo, conditioner, hair dye (para-phenylenediamine, or PPD, found in black hair dyes is a common irritant)
- Hives
- Head lice
- Scabies
- Scalp ringworm (tinea capitis)
- Scalp psoriasis
- Atopic dermatitis
- Nerve problems (neuropathy)
- Skin cancer

- Can be cooling and soothing.
- Put one or two drops in water, and apply to scalp
