Tension headaches are the most common form of headache, and they cause pressure or tightness on both sides of the head.
There are two main types of tension headache:

What Causes Tension Headaches?

What Is the Treatment for Headaches?
Treatment for tension headaches includes:
- Pain relievers
- Aspirin
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
- Naproxen (Aleve)
- Ketoprofen (Orudis)
- Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
- Analgesics containing caffeine often work best
- Antidepressants such as amitriptyline (for chronic tension headaches)
- Non-medical treatments and home remedies
- Heat
- Ice
- Massage
- Rest
- Biofeedback
How Do You Prevent Tension Headaches?
Some tension headaches may be prevented by avoiding headache triggers, such as:
- Stress
- Skipping meals
- Too much or too little caffeine
- Sleeping too much or too little
- Drinking alcohol
- Certain drinks or foods
- Medications
Relaxation techniques and stress management may also help prevent some tension headaches.
