Baroreceptors are specialized nerve cells that are located in arteries near the heart. Baroreceptors detect blood pressure and send nerve signals that reach the kidneys, heart, arteries, and veins to cause them to act together to regulate blood pressure. The baroreceptors' main function is to sustain cardiac output and ensure a healthy amount of blood reaches the organs in the body.
